차태서 교수는 서울대학교 정치외교학부 부교수로 재직 중이다. 연구 분야는 미국외교정책, 국제정치이론, 국제관계사 등이며, 이를 바탕으로 미국의 경쟁하는 국내 정체성들이 복수의 대전략 전통들을 구성하고 나아가 세계질서를 조형해 온 역사적 과정에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 이를 분석하기 위한 이론틀은 구성주의와 신고전 현실주의 등에 전거하고 있으며, 방법론적으로는 담론분석을 주로 활용해 오고 있다. 대표 저서로는 2024년 대한민국학술원 교육부 우수학술도서로 선정된 『30년의 위기』 가 있다.
최근에는 성찰적 현실주의를 토대로 탈단극 시대의 세계정치 변동과 그에 대한 미국 외교정책의 대응 방향을 비교역사적으로 탐구하는 것에 주안점을 두고 있다. 특히 패권 하강기를 맞은 미국이 냉전 초 루이스 하츠가 제기한 자유예외주의적 독백(monologue)의 문제, 즉 “평등하게 태어난 국민이 과연 그렇지 않은 타자들의 역사적 경험을 이해할 수 있는가”라는 질문을 어떻게 극복할 수 있을 것인지에 연구의 초점을 두고 있다. 궁극적으로는 미국이 새로운 형태의 자아-타자 관계를 구축할 수 있는 가능성과 그 이론적, 정치적 함의를 탐색하고 있다.
차태서 교수는 존스 홉킨스 대학교 (Johns Hopkins University)에서 정치학 박사 학위를 취득하였으며, 서울대학교 외교학과에서 석사 및 학사 학위를 받았다.
Taesuh Cha is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Seoul National University. He specializes in U.S. foreign policy, international theory, and the history of international relations.
His research focuses on the historical processes through which competing domestic identities within the United States have constituted multiple traditions of grand strategy and, in turn, shaped the evolution of world order. Theoretically, Professor Cha draws on constructivism and neoclassical realism, while methodologically he has primarily employed discourse analysis. His major book publication includes The Thirty Years' Crisis, which was selected as Outstanding Scholarly Books by the National Academy of Sciences of Korea in 2024.
His future research agenda centers on exploring transformations in global politics in the post-unipolar era and corresponding foreign policy responses, grounded in a framework of reflexive realism. In particular, he examines whether a United States confronting relative hegemonic decline can overcome what Louis Hartz once described, at the dawn of the Cold War, as the problem of liberal exceptionalist “monologue”—“Can a people ‘born equal’ ever understand peoples elsewhere that have to become so?”—and whether it can construct a new form of self–other relationship in a changing international order.
He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University, after receiving a B.A. and M.A. in International Relations at Seoul National University.
