Haillie Na-Kyung Lee is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Seoul National University in Seoul, South Korea. Previously, she was a visiting fellow at the Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance at Princeton University during the 2022-2023 academic year and served as a postdoctoral research fellow there in 2018-2019.
Lee’s research interests lie at the intersection of international political economy and the comparative political economy of East Asia, with a particular focus on Korea. Her work examines state-business relations, foreign direct investment, international dispute settlement, commercial diplomacy, domestic determinants of individual opinion, and financial liberalization.
Specializing in East Asia, Lee applies language skills and regional expertise across research projects to derive generalizable theoretical implications applicable to other economic contexts. Her work has appeared in International Organization, Comparative Political Studies, Review of International Organization, and Social Science Quarterly.
Lee earned a Ph.D. from the Department of Government at Georgetown University in 2018 and graduated cum laude from Princeton University with an A.B. in Politics and a certificate in East Asian Studies.
In 2021, Lee received Seoul National University's Creative Pioneer Researcher Fund. Until 2018, they were also involved in two IMF-funded projects (with Dennis Quinn, Maria Toyoda, and Amy Pond), coding financial openness and sub-indicators of capital openness for 80 of the most economically consequential countries.
