유홍림 교수는 서울대학교 정치외교학부 교수이자 제28대 서울대학교 총장이다. 서양정치사상사와 현대정치사상을 연구하며, 특히 자유주의, 공동체주의, 공화주의 등 현대 정치철학의 다양한 흐름에 대한 이론적 분석과 한국 사회에서의 수용 양상을 꾸준히 탐색해 왔다. 서울대학교에서 학사와 석사를 마친 후, 미국 럿거스 대학교 (Rutgers Unviersity)에서 박사 학위를 취득했으며, 하버드-옌칭연구소 (Harvard-Yenching Institute), 럿거스대학교 등에서 방문학자를 지냈다.
서울대학교 정치외교학부 교수로 재직하며 정치사상 관련 다수의 저서와 논문을 집필해 왔고, 『현대 정치사상 연구』, 『인권의 정치사상』, 『전쟁과 정의』, 『현대정치의 위기와 비전』 등의 저서를 출간하였다. 한국정치사상학회 회장, 서울대학교 사회과학대학 학장, 정치외교학부장 등을 역임하였고, 현재는 서울대학교 총장으로 재직 중이다.
Professor Honglim Ryu is a Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Seoul National University and currently serves as the 28th President of the university. His research focuses on the history of Western political thought and modern political theory, with particular interest in liberalism, communitarianism, and republicanism. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Seoul National University and earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from Rutgers University, USA. He has also held visiting scholar positions at the Harvard-Yenching Institute and Rutgers University.
Professor Ryu has authored and co-authored numerous works on political thought, including Studies in Contemporary Political Thought, Political Thought on Human Rights, War and Justice, and The Crisis and Vision of Contemporary Politics. He has served as President of the Korean Association for Political Thought, Dean of the College of Social Sciences, and Chair of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Seoul National University. He currently serves as the President of Seoul National University.
