안두환 교수는 2013년 이래 서울대학교 정치외교학부 국제관계사 담당 교수로 전쟁과 정치사상의 관계에 대한 지성사적 탐구를 하고 있다. 

안두환 교수는 관련 주제로 History of European Ideas, Global Intellectual History 등 지성사 분야 선도 국제 학술지와 편집서에 다수의 연구 논문을 출판했으며, 현재는 18세기 초 영국 국제정치 담론과 전간기 국제주의 운동에 대한 단행본 연구서를 준비 중이다.   

대표적인 국문 연구로는 마이클 하워드의 전쟁사 삼부작, 『유럽사 속의 전쟁』(2015), 『전쟁과 자유주의 양심』(2018), 『평화의 발명: 전쟁과 국제 질서에 대한 성찰』(2002)의 번역과 2023년 한국 국제정치학회 최우수 논문상 수상작인 “이론에서 역사로: 영국 국제사회 학파 다시 읽기” (2002) 등이 있으며, 현재는 전쟁과 평화의 의미를 근현대 세계사 속에서 되짚어보는 저서를 집필하고 있다.  

안두환 교수는 <국제관계사>, <역사 속의 전쟁과 평화>, <역사와 정치사상>, <제국과 국민국가의 국제정치> 등의 수업을 학부와 대학원에서 개설해 근대 주권국가 체제의 역사적 형성과 변천 과정 그리고 그 정치사상적 함의를 가르치고 있다. 

안두환 교수는 2012년 케임브리지 대학교(University of Cambridge)에서 18세기 영국 외교사와 지성사 연구로 역사학 박사 학위를 받았다. 연세대학교와 서식스 대학교에서 정치학과 사회정치사상 석사 학위를 받았으며, 학부는 연세대학교 정치외교학과를 졸업했다. 연세대학교 정치학 석사 학위 취득 이후 2000년에서 2003년 공군사관학교에서 전임 강사로 국제관계사와 전쟁사를 가르쳤으며, 2017년에서 2018년에는 하버드 대학교 래드클리프 고등연구원(Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University) 및 하버드 옌칭 연구소 (Harvard-Yenching Institute) 사회과학 분야 특별 연구원을 지냈다. 안두환 교수는 현재 하버드 대학교 (Harvard University) 글로벌 정치사상 학회, 세인트 앤드류스 대학교 (University of St. Andrews) 지성사 연구소, 성균관 대학교 글로벌 지성사 연구 단위 자문 위원으로 활동 중이다.


Since 2013, Professor Doohwan Ahn has served as a Professor of International Relations in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Seoul National University. His research focuses on the intellectual history of the relationship between war and political thought.

He has published numerous articles on these topics in leading international journals and edited volumes, including History of European Ideas and Global Intellectual History. He is currently working on books that examine early 18th-century British international political discourse and interwar internationalism.

Among Professor Ahn’s notable works in Korean is his translation of Sir Michael Howard’s trilogy on war: War in European History (2015), War and the Liberal Conscience (2018), and The Invention of Peace: Reflections on War and International Order (2002). In 2023, he received the Best Article Award from the Korean Association of International Studies for “From Theory to History: Re-reading the British School of International Society” (2002). He is also currently writing a two-volume work that re-examines the meanings of war and peace within the context of modern and contemporary world history.

Professor Ahn teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses, including International History 1 & 2, War and Peace in History, History and Political Thought, and International Politics of Empires and Nation-States. These courses explore the historical development of the modern sovereign states system and its political and ideological implications.

Professor Ahn earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of Cambridge in 2012, with a focus on eighteenth-century British diplomatic and intellectual history. He holds an M.A. in Political Science and Social Political Thought from both Yonsei University and the University of Sussex, and a B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from Yonsei University. After his first M.A. degree at Yonsei University, he taught and as a full-time lecturer at the Korean Air Force Academy from 2000 to 2003. From 2017 to 2018, he was a Fellow in Social Sciences at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University and the Harvard-Yenching Institute. Professor Ahn is currently an advisory member of the Association for Global Political Thought at Harvard University, the Institute of Intellectual History at the University of St. Andrews, and the Global Intellectual History Unit at Sunkyunkwan University.
