FIELDS OF STUDY

  1. Comparative Politics & Area Studies

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

  1. Civil Wars and Conflicts

  2. Politics in the Middle East

Conflict Management and Peace Science, Defence and Peace Economics, International Interactions, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Peace Research, Politics and Religion, Social Science and Medicine - Population Health, Terrorism and Political Violence

Brandon Ives is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Seoul National University.  His research interests span both violent and nonviolent civil conflict, with a particular focus on the Middle East.  Ives' work focuses on four interrelated areas:  the political behavior of ethnic and religious populations; the relationship between conflict and health, including the impact of conflict on health outcomes and under-5 mortality; the influence of international factors on conflict dynamics, such as the role of co-ethnic and co-religious populations across state borders and external support in conflicts; and the dynamics between repression and dissent, exploring the interaction between opposition movements and government actions.

Motivated by historical and contemporary examples, Ives’ recent research involves a cross-national data collection effort on political organizations that advocate for majority ethnic and religious populations.  The study is interested in both identifying these organizations and examining the factors influencing their conflict behavior toward minorities.

Methodologically, he uses both observational and experimental data to address key questions in civil conflict and broader understanding of international relations and comparative politics.  His work has been published in journals such as Conflict Management and Peace Science, Defence and Peace Economics, International Interactions, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Peace Research, Politics and Religion, Social Science and Medicine - Population Health, and Terrorism and Political Violence.

Ives received his PhD in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland in 2019 and has been a faculty member at Seoul National University since 2020.
