해방 80주년을 앞둔 대한민국은 이제 글로벌 중추국을 넘어 강대국으로의 도약을 준비하고 있습니다. 국제사회의 번영, 민주주의, 그리고 자유의 질서를 수호하는 선진국들의 협의체인 G7에 한국이 호주와 함께 참여해 G9으로 발전하자는 제안도 나오고 있습니다. 동유럽과 중동에서의 전쟁, 대만을 둘러싼 동북아의 긴장 고조 속에서 한국의 위상이 높아지며 글로벌 차원에서 더 큰 책임이 요구되고 있는 것입니다. 한편, 국내적으로는 정치 양극화로 인한 민주주의의 위기와 북한의 핵무장 위협이 우리에게 중요한 도전 과제로 다가오고 있습니다.
이처럼 급변하는 시대에 대응하기 위해, 정치외교학부는 비판적 사고, 명석한 판단 능력, 그리고 공공 지도자의 자질을 함양하는 교육을 통해 대한민국과 세계의 미래를 이끌어갈 인재를 양성하고자 합니다. 이를 위해 정치외교학부는 강의실에서 시작해 정치와 외교의 현장으로 이어지는 통합적인 교육의 장을 마련하고 있습니다.
서울대학교 정치외교학부는 정치학과와 외교학과가 통합되어 출범한 지 15년을 맞이하고 있습니다. 앞으로도 여러분의 지속적인 성원과 관심을 부탁드리며, 학부가 더욱 발전할 수 있도록 노력하겠습니다. 감사합니다.

As Korea approaches the 80th anniversary of liberation, the nation is preparing to leap beyond being a global pivotal state to becoming a major power. There have been proposals for Korea to join Australia in expanding the G7 into a G9, a leading group of nations committed to global prosperity, democracy, and the protection of a free world order. Amid rising tensions in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Northeast Asia surrounding Taiwan, Korea’s growing global stature demands even greater responsibility on the world stage. Domestically, the challenges of political polarization, a potential crisis for democracy, and the threat posed by North Korea’s nuclear armament present significant hurdles.
In response to these rapidly changing times, the Department of Political Science and International Relations strives to cultivate critical thinking, sound judgment, and the qualities of public leadership through an educational program designed to prepare future leaders of Korea and the world. To this end, we have created an integrated educational environment that begins in the classroom and extends to the realms of politics and diplomacy.
The Department of Political Science and International Relations is now entering its 15th year since the merger of the Political Science and International Relations programs. We ask for your continued support and interest as we work towards further advancement of our department. Thank you.
